Monochromatic HDR

The brand new contest location for the Focal Press Monthly Photography Contest is now open!

Enter your image here: Focal Press Monthly Photography Contest

This month we are exploring one of the latest trends in digital photography – HDR photography.   Two words that come to mind when describing HDR images are intensity and contrast. The process seems to breathe life into an image, giving it a depth that wasn’t there before.  We would love to see the results of your explorations with this process!

November’s contest is sponsored by the recently published book Monochromatic HDR Photography which explores the intersection between this and another popular trend of the digital revolution – black and white photography.

About the Book:

Monochromatic HDR Photography explains techniques for extending dynamic range, monochromatic conversion methods and best practices where the two technologies intersect. Since successful digital monochromatic image creation generally requires using the color information inherent in RAW exposures, most case studies will be presented in full color.

In addition, Monochromatic HDR Photography provides extensive coverage of the creative vision required to successfully create monochromatic HDR images and the workflow necessary to make art prints from this specialized image making technique.

I am so, so, so excited to share our new contest module with all of you for our August photo contest, which will be for the theme “Travel”. The new module should be live early next week — and I will be posting the winners for the June contest shortly as well. And later this month I will post the winners for Urban & Rural Decay Photography.

Thank you all so much for your patience — and for everyone who has answered our survey so far!

Stay tuned!

My apologies for the late post! The July Photo Contest for Urban & Rural Decay photography is live at:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/focalpressdecayphotography/

In 2013, Focal Press will publish a new book by author J. Dennis Thomas on URBAN & RURAL DECAY PHOTOGRAPHY. We would like to include up to ten images in the book from our loyal readers/photographers. We have set up a Flickr group for submissions. Click here to view images and enter!

Submissions will be accepted from now through July 31st at 11:59pm EST. At that time, the author will choose the photos he believes best represent the material in the book. We will contact those entrants immediately and discuss the details of having their photo included as part of the printed book. Even if your photo is chosen, you can always opt out should you so choose.

Focal Press has been publishing books and content for photographers and artists since 1938. Our authors are all working photographers and/or artists so you can be sure the material is meaningful and useful as you work to build your creative portfolio.

Hello loyal Photography Contest entrants!

Focal Press has a new home! We are now part of the Taylor & Francis Group, and with our move, we thought it was high time we did a little updating to the monthly photo contest.

First things first: the July and August photo contest are going to be a bit different as we test out two new platforms. Both the July and August contests will last two weeks — July 15-July 31 and Aug 1-Aug 15. The regular monthly contest – new and improved – will launch as scheduled on September 1st.

The July contest will be Urban Decay Photography, judged by J. Dennis Thomas, author of our upcoming book on urban decay photography. This is an extra special contest because Denny is going to choose up to ten images to actually be published in the book! Stay tuned for details on where and how to enter. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter or join our Flickr group!

The August contest will be Travel Photography, judged by Haje Jan Kamps, author of several Focal titles, including the upcoming Focus On Travel Photography and The Rules of Photography and How to Break Them, both due out this Fall.

Secondly, we want YOUR feedback, our loyal, awesome entrants who make the contest what it is. Click here to fill out a very brief survey about the contest – the first of several surveys we’ll be running as we update the contest. You can also email additional feedback to me directly at any time — Kate.Iannotti@taylorandfrancis.com.
